Kenya just set an air-traffic record — and it was domestic travellers who set it, not the inbound long-haul…

Kenya moved a record 13.1 million air passengers in the year to June 2026, up from 12.955m a year earlier — about 145,000 more travellers (KAA preliminary data, via Daily Nation, 6 Aug). The line that matters sits underneath it: domestic routes were roughly 41% of all traffic, and KAA MD Moses Wekesa says it was domestic travel that carried the record while international numbers softened under Middle East disruption.

What everyone is missing: the record was set because international dipped, not alongside it. Domestic and regional demand is counter-cyclical to exactly the Western shocks — advisories, long-haul softness, recession fear — that empty a coast or a corridor overnight. Fly748, back flying scheduled routes since May, is running strong Nairobi–Mombasa and Ukunda/Diani loads this school holiday, one-way fares from KSh 7,700 (Tuko, 6 Aug). That is real, growing, FX-proof demand — and most inbound-tuned properties are set up to miss it.

🏖 Beach: the direct beneficiary. Package resident/school-holiday weekend rates, make sure M-Pesa and local rails work, and list where Kenyans actually book. This demand doesn't read a State Department bulletin.
🦁 Bush: your EAC-resident tier is the counter-cyclical floor under Western advisory risk — hold it as a revenue line, not a discount dump.
🏙 City: the record ran on a hub whose domestic legs grew while international slowed. Domestic corporate + MICE (Hotel Expo 19–21 Aug, MKTE Oct) is the compounding book.
