Kenya's inflation hit 7.3% on 17.1% dearer transport, and with the shilling flat, 2027 dollar rates are losing margin before Ebola costs a single booking

The month's argument has been about demand: Level 3, nine Ebola cases, a boarding form. The number that landed on 30 October was about cost. Kenya's annual inflation rose to 7.3% from 6.8%, the highest since July 2023, with transport up 17.1% and diesel up 32.5% on a year earlier (KNBS, 30 Oct). Core inflation is only 4.3%. Non-core, meaning food and fuel, is 15.1%.

What everyone is missing: that split matters more than the headline. A fuel-and-food shock is not a wage shock, so it lands on lines a lodge cannot trim: transfers, game drives, generators, provisions. The shilling was KSh129.91 to the dollar on 22 October, against 129.81 a week earlier (CBK, 23 Oct). With the currency still, local inflation is dollar cost for anything bought in shillings, so 2027 dollar rates set on spring costs are quietly marked down. That is our inference.

EPRA's 15 Oct to 14 Nov prices: diesel KSh227.76, petrol 226.96 (Capital FM, 16 Oct). The Act signed 16 Oct extends 8% for 90 days from 14 Oct. At 16%, our arithmetic puts diesel near KSh244.6, up 7.4%.

3️⃣ KENYA'S ACCOMMODATION AND FOOD GROWTH ROUGHLY HALVED IN Q2
Accommodation and food services grew 7.4% in the second quarter, down from 14.7% in the first (CBK bulletin, 23 Oct). That is sector growth, not occupancy.

Rwanda's September urban index: hotels and restaurants 18.9%, energy 45.0% (NISR, 10 Oct). Tanzania 4.3%, transport 14.0% (NBS, September). Uganda's policy rate: 12.0%. Local currency.
