Kenya just posted the region's steepest cost print — and the gap with its neighbours is now a rate-strategy problem.
━━━━━━━━━
1️⃣ KENYA INFLATION HITS A TWO-YEAR HIGH — 6.5%
Kenya's annual inflation rose to 6.5% in July, its highest in nearly two years, per KNBS data released 31 July (Bloomberg confirmed the same day). Transport is up 15.6% year-on-year and food 9.0% — the two lines that hit safari transfers and F&B hardest. The shilling was broadly flat, so this is a domestic cost story, not an FX one.
🎯 So what: Re-price transfer contracts and lock food-supply terms now; the cost line is moving ahead of your rate card.

2️⃣ THE REGIONAL COST GAP IS WIDENING
Set Kenya's 6.5% against Uganda at 4.0% (UBOS, July) and Tanzania at 4.0% (NBS, June): Kenya is now the clear cost outlier by two and a half points. For anyone selling multi-country itineraries, the margin maths increasingly favours Ugandan and Tanzanian beds.
🎯 So what: Protect the Kenya leg on margin, not volume; where the itinerary allows, shift discretionary nights to the cheaper cost base.

3️⃣ THE ELECTRICITY BILL NOBODY REPORTS
The squeeze runs deeper than the headline. EPRA's July pass-throughs took the fuel energy cost charge to KSh 3.20/kWh, with forex and inflation adjustments pushing total monthly add-ons above KSh 5/kWh — a bigger swing for most properties than the fuel-price review, and rarely reported.
🎯 So what: Read the per-kWh add-ons on your July bill before setting August budgets; a full property runs six figures of exposure here.

📡 RADAR
• EPRA monthly fuel-price review due ~14 Aug — transfer and generator cost input (🇰🇪).
• US entry-ban renewal decision on/around 12 Aug — covers DRC/Uganda travellers; assume roll-over.
• Magical Kenya Travel Expo, Nairobi, 6–8 Oct — record 10,000+ delegates; close out standard rate early.
