EA HOSPITALITY PULSE โ Tue 11 Aug, Morning
Quiet news morning. One Expert Brief, then the board.
1๏ธโฃ THE ROUTE MAP LOOKS LIKE GROWTH. THE MARGIN BEHIND IT LOOKS LIKE FRAGILITY.
Every new frequency into Nairobi, Entebbe, Kigali and Zanzibar reads to an owner as free demand. More seats, more guests, plan the rooms around them. That is the wrong thing to be watching.
The carriers flying those seats are the least profitable in the world. IATA's outlook (December 2025, revised down through 2026) puts African airlines' 2026 net profit at about US$100m โ a 0.2% margin, and roughly US$0.40 per passenger, down from US$2.10 in 2025. Africa is simultaneously the fastest-growing aviation market on earth (demand up ~10%) and the thinnest-margin one, carrying the highest unit costs globally โ near 140 US-cents per ATK, about double the industry average (IATA/AFRAA).
What everyone is missing: a route launch is not a demand guarantee โ it's a bet made by an operator with no buffer. At a 0.2% margin, the first thing a carrier trims when fuel, FX or bookings wobble is the newest, thinnest route. And those are precisely the frequencies feeding secondary safari and beach gateways. Airlift you didn't build, you can't defend.
๐ฏ So what, by segment
๐ฆ Bush: most exposed. A safari season hung on one newly launched or seasonal regional frequency is a fragile plan โ keep multi-gateway routing and push direct/advance bookings so a schedule cut doesn't empty your season.
๐ Beach: single-carrier leisure and charter routes (e.g. RwandAir's Zanzibar/Mombasa services resumed Dec 2025) are the classic first-to-be-trimmed in a squeeze. Hold rate, but keep a source-market and routing spread.
๐ City: trunk routes on the strongest balance sheets are your safest airlift โ but don't bank every new frequency straight into corporate-rate assumptions.
๐ท Regional ยท All segments ยท Confidence: High (figures dated & sourced)
๐ THE BOARD
โ STILL TRUE โ Uganda US Level 4 "Do Not Travel" unchanged (State Dept, 5 Aug); Kenya Level 2; TZ & Zanzibar Level 3. The Uganda/DRC decoupling question resolves tomorrow, not today โ don't price a US-market rebound you can't yet see.
๐ค MICE WATCH โ Hotel Expo Kenya, Nairobi/KICC, 19โ21 Aug (city midweek bump). WTA Africa Gala, Zanzibar, 28 Aug (north/east coast compression, last week of Aug).
