The DRC outbreak became the deadliest in that country's history today.
The DRC outbreak became the deadliest in that country's history today. Tomorrow, the committee that governs your guests' entry rules sits.

1️⃣ DRC EBOLA NOW THE DEADLIEST IN ITS HISTORY
DRC's public health institute puts the toll at 2,325 deaths from 4,945 confirmed cases, passing the 2018–20 epidemic (CNN, 16 August; Al Jazeera and Bloomberg, 17 August). 101 new cases in the previous 24 hours. The case fatality ratio has climbed from about 20% in early June to 46%. The outbreak now spans 55 health zones across six provinces — Ituri, North Kivu, Haut-Uele, Tshopo, South Kivu and Bas-Uele — against the 53 zones cited in the 12 August US order.
The WHO IHR Emergency Committee on the Bundibugyo PHEIC meets tomorrow, 18 August.
🎯 So what: Nothing in your entry rules changed today. Brief the front desk on that before a guest reads a headline and rings. The 28 August trap is unpacked in tonight's Big Read.

2️⃣ EAC OPENS A COMPETITION INQUIRY INTO EUROPCAR'S OWNER
The EAC Competition Authority has published Merger Inquiry Notice No. 14 of 2026 — the proposed acquisition of control over Europcar Mobility Group S.A. by Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft — inviting representations under Regulation 8 of the EAC Competition (Mergers and Acquisitions) Regulations. We first saw it at 13:52 EAT today and have not seen it reported elsewhere yet.
That the notice exists is Confirmed. What it does to ground-transport pricing is inference: Europcar trades across the EAC through franchises, and transfers sit inside most DMC packages.
🎯 So what: If Europcar or its EA franchisee is in your transfer contracts, this is the window to make representations, not to renegotiate. Check whether your 2027 transfer rates are contracted or indexed.

3️⃣ A PAGEANT IS NOT A COMPRESSION EVENT
Miss Tourism East Africa's inaugural finals run 5–12 September at the Marriott Kampala, drawing seven countries plus Zanzibar. Tanzania is sending six delegates rather than the standard three, split between the mainland and Zanzibar (Daily News TZ / allAfrica, 17 August).
Do the arithmetic before you yield on it. Seven delegations at roughly three each is about two dozen contestants plus chaperones, judges and crew — a single-property group booking, not a city event.
🎯 So what: Treat this as a Marriott house-count question, not a market signal. Lifting BAR city-wide on a two-dozen-contestant pageant hands a week of corporate share to the property next door.
