Quiet news slot.
Quiet news slot. So here is a number in the Bank of Tanzania's survey that nobody has read properly.
⚠️ CORRECTION (added 28 Aug, 13:20 EAT) — this edition first argued Zanzibar's arrivals growth was "running out", citing June's +3.1%. That was wrong, and it was wrong when written. July 2026 set an all-time July record of 107,801 arrivals, +9.6% on July 2025 — published by the Office of the Chief Government Statistician on 14 August, a fortnight before we wrote. We built a trend on one month of a violently seasonal series and missed the release. The yield and package-mix findings below are unaffected; the volume read is corrected in place.

1️⃣ THE MAINLAND JUST OVERTOOK ZANZIBAR ON YIELD
For the first time, a visitor night on mainland Tanzania is worth more than a visitor night in Zanzibar: USD 289 against USD 274 (Bank of Tanzania, 2025 International Visitors' Exit Survey, released 13 July 2026). A year earlier the island led, USD 251 to USD 243. Mainland spend rose 19.1%; Zanzibar's rose 9%.
The mechanism sits in the same document. Package tours took 67.2% of Zanzibar's visitors in 2025, up from 61.8% — but their share of the island's earnings fell to 59.1% from 63.6%. Zanzibar's package guests spent USD 379 a night, DOWN from USD 391. That is the only spend line in the survey that moved backwards. Independent travellers went the other way: USD 211, up 14% from USD 185.
Our read, labelled as inference: the island is selling more of its inventory through intermediaries paying less for it — and record volume is what keeps the trade invisible. July 2026 was an all-time July high of 107,801 arrivals, +9.6% on July 2025 and +54.9% on June (Office of the Chief Government Statistician, via The Citizen, 14 August 2026). Record arrivals and a falling package rate are not a contradiction. They are the trade.
🎯 So what: Count what share of your room-nights went through contracted allocation this year against last. Zanzibar added 5.4 points of package mix and was paid 3% less per night for it.

2️⃣ PACKAGE ISN'T THE PROBLEM. UNDIFFERENTIATED PACKAGE IS.
Same survey: mainland package guests spent USD 479 a night, up from USD 416. By activity, hunting took USD 710.8 (+54%), cultural tourism USD 537 and wildlife safari USD 452 — against birdwatching at USD 105.6. Average stay fell a night on both circuits, to 9 on the mainland and 6 in Zanzibar.
🎯 So what: Specialisation prices; a substitutable beach night does not. Bush operators can hold rate on specialist product. Everyone lost a night of stay — recover it on rate, not volume.

3️⃣ STILL TRUE — THE ADVISORY SPLIT ON ZANZIBAR
The US has held Tanzania and Zanzibar at Level 3 "Reconsider travel" since 31 October 2025, with no Zanzibar carve-out (verified against travel.state.gov, 4 August 2026). The UK has no advisory against travel. Zanzibar's two biggest source markets are Italy at 18.8% and France at 10.6%.
🎯 So what: Don't discount a European base against an American advisory that doesn't bind it.
