Africa's hotels adopted AI faster than anywhere on earth. New data says that was the easy part.

THE HEADLINE NUMBER
57% of Middle East & Africa hotel chains have already integrated AI-driven features, against 35% globally and under 30% in Europe, the Americas and Asia-Pacific (h2c/Profitroom Global Hospitality Technology Study, 171 chains, 27 October 2025). MEA hoteliers also report the highest trust in AI of any region surveyed.

BUT THE BIGGER STUDY SAYS
"State of Distribution 2026" — RateGain, NYU's Tisch Center of Hospitality and HEDNA, built on 270+ brands and 58,000+ properties across 53 countries — finds more than half of hotels worldwide now use or are buying generative AI. Fewer than one in ten report it has cut manual workload by more than 30%. Only 8% of chains have a company-wide AI strategy at all. "Buying AI is easy. Getting value from it is not," says RateGain's Bhanu Chopra.

WHERE EAST AFRICA FITS
CityBlue Hotels — Nairobi, Mombasa, Kigali, Dar es Salaam, Accra — announced an AI-native operations partnership with London's Inntelo AI in March. The RateGain data says the clearest gains go to mid-sized chains, not giants: large enough to invest properly, small enough to avoid the legacy-systems tangle that slows a global brand to a crawl. "As we scale, AI-native operations become essential to delivering consistency," says CityBlue's Jameel Verjee.
🎯 So what: If a vendor pitches you this quarter, the question worth asking isn't whether it runs the latest model — it's whether it can prove, with a number, that it has cut someone's workload by more than 30% at a property that looks like yours. Most vendors cannot answer that yet, in Nairobi or New York.
