1️⃣ The US raised Kenya from Level 2 to Level 3 on 19 October, citing Ebola alongside crime and terrorism

travel.state.gov now reads "Reconsider Travel" for Kenya, led by health risk after eight confirmed Ebola cases. Level 4 areas are unchanged: Eastleigh, Kibera, the north-east and north coast, West Pokot and Turkana. The page footer still says "last updated 30 July", which conflicts with the 19 Oct issue date (US State Department, read 20 Oct; Kenyans.co.ke, 20 Oct). UK FCDO re-dated Kenya on 16 Oct for Ebola screening with no level change, and Canada's 15 Oct update kept "high degree of caution" (FCDO; travel.gc.ca, read 20 Oct).
Our inference: Kenya now ranks above Tanzania (Level 2 since 16 Oct) in US eyes, and level-triggered rules at some insurers and corporate travel desks may bite. The UK and Canadian levels are unchanged.
🎯 So what: ask US agents which policies they apply, offer free date changes instead of discounts, and send US guests the Level 4 map.

2️⃣ Kenya's public health workers' strike reached 90 days on 19 October, with nationwide demonstrations threatened from Wednesday 21 October

The Kenya Environmental Health and Public Health Practitioners Union gave government 48 hours to end the strike. It wants permanent jobs for contract staff, higher risk allowances and signed pay deals honoured. Leaders warn the strike undermines Ebola containment, with about 4,200 public health officers serving nearly 50 million people (Kenyans.co.ke, 19 Oct, 19:50 EAT). A separate fuel-price protest call tied to Mashujaa Day, 20 Oct, names no date or route and no police statement; matatu owners say they will not strike (The Star, 20 Oct).
Our inference: two protest calls in 48 hours raise the odds of Nairobi road delays.
🎯 So what: add buffer to Wednesday airport transfers and confirm staff commutes tonight.

3️⃣ Zanzibar's airline seats are forecast to rise 33% over six months while online-agency room rates fell about 18% in the year to October

ATTA released Data Appeal Mabrian figures at its Essence of Africa buyer forum in Zanzibar, 20 to 22 Oct. Domestic seats are up 36% and international 31% year on year; forward GDS bookings to March 2027 are up 10%; UK bookings are up 51%. The release gives no arrivals figures and does not explain how the 33% was built (VoyagesAfriq, 20 Oct; ATTA).
Our inference: seats are growing faster than forward bookings, so the 18% rate drop may continue. The bases differ, so this is direction only.
🎯 So what: hold December to March rates, and check parity before releasing allotments.
